CCCR Symposium

On November 19, Hawai‘i P-20 hosted the College, Career, and Community Readiness (CCCR) Symposium on November 19 to bring together over 130 key education and community stakeholders from across the state to identify linkages between the newly adopted CCCR definition and existing programs and initiatives as well as to highlight local and national best practices that align with the intent of the definition.

The event featured national speakers Emmy Glancy, Academic Policy Officer, P20 Alignment Director for the Colorado Department of Higher Education and Shannon Gilkey, Senior Associate of P-20 Initiatives within Academic Affairs at the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, who shared with the group the history of college and career readiness work in their states. There was also a panel discussion featuring Hawai‘i education and community leaders: Bernadette Howard, State Director of Career and Technical Education; Gail Mukaihata-Hannemann, CEO, Girl Scouts of Hawai’i; Stephen Schatz, Assistant Superintendent for Strategic Reform, Hawaii State Department of Education; and Donald B. Young, Dean of the College of Education and Professor of Science Education, UH Mānoa; who reflected on what the newly adopted CCCR definition meant for their organizations and discussed best approaches to maintain meaningful momentum moving forward.

April 6, 2013 Math Summit

The sixth annual math summit coordinated by Hawai‘i P-20 brought together faculty and administrators from all ten UH campuses, as well as high schools teachers and administrators from the Hawai‘i Department of Education, to discuss math alignment around the Common Core State Standards and related assessments on April 6, 2013. Hawai‘i P-20, the HIDOE, and the UH System sponsored the Summit at Windward Community College.

Jason Zimba, one of the principal authors of the Common Core State Standards for mathematics, discussed how the standards are designed to better-prepare students for the rigor and demands of college-level math. Dr. Bob Pelayo, Dr. Diane Barrett, and Dr. Mitch Anderson from UH Hilo and Eric Hagiwara from Waiakea High School, shared examples from their collaborative Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry curriculum development project.  Anita Huang and Karen Lee from Hawai‘i P-20 shared their recent analysis of Algebra II completers, and led a discussion on the use of pre-college student characteristics for placement. Dr. Monique Chyba from UH Mānoa led a conversation around expectations for students in Math 100, and how those will evolve as the Common Core rolls out. Dr. Joanne Itano, Associate VP for Academic Affairs at the UH System, closed the session stressing the importance of cross-agency alignment, and praising the collaborative efforts of the teachers, faculty, and administrators who have committed to strengthening alignment to ease the transition from high school to post secondary education for all students in the state of Hawai‘i.
